Lidl Hellas and Odyssea continue to offer “A Meal of Joy” to people in need in Athens and Thessaloniki

Lidl Hellas and Odyssea are continuing the “A Meal of Joy” initiative, providing nutritious, vegetarian meals to people who need them. This action now takes place in both Thessaloniki and Athens, supporting even more people while also promoting a more sustainable approach to food and cooking.

Since the beginning of 2025, Odyssea, with the valuable support of Lidl Hellas, has offered 5,898 servings of warm food, thanks to the help of 245 volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to support those in need.

This initiative supports organisations like the Organisation Against Drugs (OKANA), the Open Day Centre of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the Social Service Syn-Anthropos Arsis, Arsis Streetwork, Shelters for Unaccompanied Minors, as well as families living below the poverty line, homeless people, and people in recovery.

Lidl Hellas covers the operating costs of the action and provides fresh, high-quality ingredients – fruit, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains – for the preparation of meals, following the Planetary Health Diet (PHD) model. This diet focuses on both human health and the sustainability of our planet. In this way, Lidl Hellas actively supports local communities and strengthens Odyssea’s efforts to respond to real human needs.

In addition, with a strong focus on zero waste and under the guidance of an experienced chef, participants not only offer their help, connect with each other, and support their local communities, but also gain knowledge and skills in sustainable cooking.

Also, in 2025, the “Boxes of Love” initiative started in collaboration with Lidl Hellas. Through this action, 129 families living below the poverty line have already received packages with dry food and essential goods, mainly in Kamatero and Megara. More than 429 boxes have been offered so far, thanks to the contribution of 103 volunteers over the past six months. This initiative supports organisations and vulnerable groups in Athens and Thessaloniki, including The Smile of the Child, A21, the Shelter for Abused Women of EKKA in Thessaloniki, the Hellenic Multiple Sclerosis Society in Ilioupoli, and the Community Centre of Rentis-Nikaia Municipality.

Expanding these actions to Athens, in addition to Thessaloniki, is another step to increase the positive social impact of this effort. Together, we continue with care, consistency, and respect – offering not only food, but also dignity, support, hope, and independence.
