A Meal of Joy
Description
“A Meal of Joy” is an initiative of Odyssea’s Youth Center in Thessaloniki, in partnership with Lidl Hellas, aimed at supporting the city’s homeless population. Every week, the team gathers at the Youth Center to cook meals and distribute them to organisations working with homeless people. The initiative connects social solidarity with the collective preparation and distribution of meals. Odyssea’s strategic partnership with Lidl Hellas focuses on supporting vulnerable populations through targeted social impact initiatives, including a Social Kitchen and the distribution of “Boxes of Love”, food aid packages for families in need in Athens and Thessaloniki.

Problem
Homelessness and food insecurity remain persistent realities in Thessaloniki and Athens. People sleeping rough or living in precarious housing lack reliable access to nutritious meals, while households living below the poverty line struggle to cover basic food needs. Organisations working directly with these populations are stretched thin and depend on consistent, coordinated support to meet demand.
Solution
The initiative combines direct humanitarian assistance with community engagement, addressing immediate needs while promoting social cohesion and inclusion. Through the Social Kitchen at the Youth Center in Thessaloniki, volunteers and staff prepare nutritious meals every week using fresh ingredients, and distribute them to organisations assisting people facing food insecurity. In parallel, “Boxes of Love” deliver basic food items directly to households living below the poverty line in Athens and Thessaloniki. Complementary awareness-raising activities and volunteer mobilisation strengthen community participation, turning the initiative into a shared effort rather than a one-way service.
