Growroom – a garden sphere that feeds a neighbourhood

The Growroom, an urban greenhouse that stacks plants and greeneries tier upon tier, is a farming pavilion that looks into how cities can feed themselves through food-producing architecture. This large, multi-tiered spherical garden is designed to sustainably grow enough food to support an entire neighborhood.

The Growroom was designed by SPACE10, a future-living lab, launched and supported by IKEA, and architects Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum. SPACE10 is on a mission to create innovative solutions to some of the major societal changes expected to affect us, and to enable a better everyday life for people and our planet.

Odyssea worked side by side with SGYF, the Syrian and Greek Youth Forum, and in December 2019 completed the building of our own Growroom at Odyssea’s premises in Athens,Greece.

Our vision is to implement sustainable, food-production solutions like Growroom to refugee camps in Greece hoping to help spur local growing and sourcing, and make food accessible to people who are in need.

For building the Growroom, we used:

Materials:

  • 13 sheets of plywood: 2440mm x 1220mm x 18mm
  • 4 sheets of plywood: 2440mm x 1220mm x 4mm
  • 500 stainless pan head screws: 3.5mm x 30mm

Machinery & Tools:

  • CNC machine with a cutter, 8mm in diameter.
  • Laser cutter

Manpower:

  • 15 people
  • 28 hrs of CNC Milling

All materials were cut in Ergastirio Poio, the makerspace of Serafeio City of Athens.
